Violence Against Rural Indigenous Women: Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, and the United States
Indigenous women and girls suffer extreme and disparate levels of gender-based violence, especially those living in rural and remote communities on their own indigenous lands. A panel of indigenous women from Brazil, Guatemala, and the United States will discuss how violations of indigenous peoples’ land rights and right of self-government expose their women and girls to racial discrimination, gender-based violence, and other human rights violations and how living in rural communities intensifies these problems.
Cosponsors include the Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center, the Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon, the Indian Law Resource Center, the Interethnic Association of the Development of the Peruvian Amazon, the International Mayan League, the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, the Native Women’s Society of the Great Plains, and the Pouhana O Nā Wāhine.
